Nestled near Madikeri, Abbey Falls stands surrounded between the coffee and spice plantations. The sound of water gushing down mixed with aromas filling the air greet you before you got a view of Abbey Falls.

History of the Abbey Falls


Abbey Falls, which are also called Abbi Falls, was initially named as Jessy Falls as when the Coorg’s first British Chaplin visited the place, fell in love with its unparalleled beauty. He then dedicated and named the waterfall ‘Jessy Falls’ after the name of his daughter.

After the Independence of India, the waterfall and the area surrounding with its rich flora and fauna came under the control of Government of India. Later, the area of waterfall purchased by Mr. Neravanda B. Nanaiah from the Government, and transformed     it into spice and coffee plantations.

As the forests cleared up, Abbey Falls started to attract People’s attention. The Abbey Fall is now located on a private property yet a popular sightseeing place in Coorg.

Abbey Falls is located in western region of Coorg, Karnataka. The closest town to Abbey Falls is Madikeri which is located at a distance of 5.5 kms. The other cities like Mangalore and Mysore are located about 141.1 kms and 271.4 kms respectively from Abbey Falls. Bangalore and Kushalnagar is approximately 268 kms and 33.3 kms respectively from Abbey Falls. The other cities like Mandalpatti is also approximately 10.3 kms from Abbey Fall.

Best time to visit Abbey Falls

The best time to visit Abbey Falls is undoubtedly the monsoon season. If you actually want to see the scenic beauty of Abbey Falls, it is advised you to visit Abbey Falls from July to October. But if you want to avoid rain, you can plan your trip at any time of the year.

Abbey Fall Timings and Entry Fees

One can visit Abbey Falls on any day of week as it remains open for all seven days. The timing for visiting the waterfall is from 9 am to 5 Pm.

There is a minimal entry fee of INR 15 per person.

Things to remember while visiting Abbey Falls

If you are visiting Abbey Falls during the monsoon season, do look-out for slippery steps, small insects and leeches.

The waterfall may tempt you to take a swim. But it is advisable to avoid these types of activities as the water turn out to be risky especially during the monsoon season.

If you are planning to spend a couple of hours at Abbey Falls, carry some food items and water bottle also as there is no food stall near the Abbey Falls. But on the way to waterfall, you will find few roadside food stalls.
